My brother had ODD as a child/teen. He was not that severe, but he was very difficult to deal with. After numerous therapies and different schools he ended up across the country in a program for kids like him. My parents took it very seriously, and even they admitted he needed more help than they could provide. We sometimes still see flashes of it as an adult - he doesn't like being told what to do. But her has a career and a family so I guess he's doing OK.

OP definitely has a problem--a husband who won't set boundaries with his overbearing mother. Is he serious, letting her take his preschooler on vacation out-of-state, without her mother, and who has never slept away from home? That is a recipe for disaster. I wouldn't trust Monster-in-Law to be alone with my child after that. Besides, a three-year-old isn't going to remember much of the trip anyway.

It's not only a personal safety issue, but a liability one as well. The parents, although they use the ODD as an excuse, are in denial about the seriousness of the situation. What's to stop their son from deliberately injuring himself, then blaming OP? Even though a well-documented history of antisocial behavior would set the record straight, the hassle would be a nightmare. Good on OP for standing her ground.

This past week, two of my cousins just passed away in a violent car crash because the driver fell asleep behind the wheel. They were little brothers to me. I’d call them 30 seconds before the crash to wake them up 😢I miss them so much already and I will miss them for the rest of my life 😞.
